Somewhere between the second and third hail claim, most homeowners around here start asking the same question: is there a shingle that just handles this? The answer is a qualified yes, and the qualifications are the part nobody explains properly.
Impact resistant shingles are rated by a test called UL 2218. Almost every roofer in Tarrant County will mention Class 4 to you, usually attached to a promise about your insurance bill. Most of them will not tell you what the rating actually measures or where it stops being useful. Seth built this company around explaining the parts other people skip, so let us do that.
The steel ball drop, described accurately
UL 2218 is a laboratory impact test, and once you know how it works you will read the ratings very differently.
A shingle sample is mounted on a deck. A solid steel ball is dropped onto it from a set height, twice in the same spot. Then the sample gets turned over and inspected for cracking, tearing, or any rupture of the mat underneath. If the mat is intact, it passes at that level.
The classes correspond to ball size and drop height. Class 3 uses a ball of roughly one and three quarter inches. Class 4, the top of the scale, uses a two inch steel ball dropped from twenty feet. Two hits, same location, no rupture, and you get the rating stamped on the wrapper.
Now the honest part. A steel ball is not hail. Steel is far denser than ice, so a two inch steel ball hits considerably harder than a two inch hailstone, which sounds like the test is conservative in your favor, and in one dimension it is. But the test is also a single controlled variable in a lab, and a real North Texas storm is not.
What UL 2218 does not simulate is worth listing plainly. It does not simulate wind driven hail arriving at a forty five degree angle instead of straight down, which changes how energy transfers into the shingle surface. It does not simulate density, meaning hundreds of impacts across one slope in four minutes rather than two impacts in one spot. It does not account for irregular, spiked, or fused hailstones, which North Texas produces regularly and which concentrate force differently than a smooth sphere. It does not test the shingle at a hundred and five degrees in August or at thirty degrees in an ice storm, and asphalt behaves very differently at those two temperatures. And it says nothing at all about granule loss, which is the failure mode that actually shortens a roof’s life after hail.
That last one deserves emphasis. A Class 4 shingle can pass the impact test perfectly and still lose granules across a whole slope in a bad storm. The mat did not rupture, so the roof is not leaking, but the surface that protects the asphalt from ultraviolet light is thinner than it was. Impact resistance and cosmetic resilience are two different properties and the rating only speaks to one of them.
What the rating buys you at real hailstone sizes
Here is the practical translation, based on what we see on roofs across Haslet, Keller, Roanoke, and Justin after storms.
Under about an inch, most roofs in decent condition come through without functional damage regardless of rating. You might get granule scatter in the gutters. A standard architectural shingle usually handles this fine.
From one inch to about an inch and three quarters, which is the most common damaging range in this region, the difference between shingle types starts to show. This is where an older three tab roof gets bruised heavily, a standard architectural shingle takes real hits, and an impact rated product often comes through with cosmetic marking rather than mat fracture. This band is where Class 4 earns its keep, and it happens to be the band we see most often.
Above two inches, honesty requires a different answer. Baseball sized hail damages Class 4 shingles. We have pulled impact rated roofs off houses after severe events and the mats were cracked like anything else. The rating raises the threshold considerably. It does not create a roof that hail cannot hurt, and any salesman telling you otherwise is doing the thing this company exists to counteract.
There is one more real benefit people rarely mention. Impact rated shingles are built with a modified asphalt, usually rubberized with a polymer, which stays more flexible across the temperature swings we get here. That flexibility is why they resist cracking, and it also tends to mean better performance against wind uplift and against the thermal cycling that ages an ordinary shingle. You are buying a tougher material, and toughness shows up in more places than the hail test.
The insurance discount conversation, framed honestly
This is where a lot of bad information circulates, and where we are going to be deliberately unspecific, because specificity here would be inventing numbers.
Many Texas carriers do offer a premium credit for a roof built with UL 2218 Class 4 shingles. It exists because insurers pay out enormous sums on hail in this state and a roof less likely to generate a claim is worth something to them. Some carriers also credit Class 3, some do not credit anything, some structure it as a discount on the wind and hail portion of your premium only, and some have quietly reduced or restructured these credits in recent years.
We will not tell you what percentage you will get, because we do not know and neither does any roofer who quotes you one. That number belongs to your carrier, your policy form, your county, and your roof. Call your agent, ask specifically whether they offer an impact resistant roof credit, ask which classes qualify, and ask what documentation they need. Write the answer down.
The documentation part matters more than people expect. Carriers generally want a certificate from the manufacturer or a signed statement from the installing contractor identifying the exact product and its UL classification. We provide that paperwork on every impact rated roof we install, because a discount you cannot document is a discount you are not getting. Ask any contractor bidding your job whether they supply it.
One more thing worth saying out loud. A discount that renews every year for the twenty or twenty five years the roof is on the house is not nothing, and it compounds against the upcharge in a way a single year of savings does not show. Run the arithmetic over the life of the roof rather than over one renewal, and ask your agent whether the credit is guaranteed for the life of the roof or reviewed periodically. Some are.
Weighing the extra cost without pretending we know your roof
Impact rated shingles cost more than standard architectural shingles. We are not going to print figures, partly because material pricing moves constantly and partly because a number without your square footage, pitch, and layer count is meaningless.
What we can give you is the framework we use when a homeowner asks whether it is worth it.
Consider how long you intend to be in the house. A homeowner planning to be there twenty years is buying a different thing than someone likely to sell in three, because the insurance credit and the avoided claim both accrue over time.
Consider your claim history at that address. If the property has generated two or three hail claims in the past decade, the storm track over your neighborhood is not going to change and you are making a bet you have already lost twice.
Consider your deductible. Many wind and hail deductibles in Texas are written as a percentage of the dwelling coverage rather than a flat amount, and homeowners are frequently surprised by how large that turns out to be. A roof that keeps you from filing at all is worth the difference between the shingle grades faster than most people calculate.
And consider the tree situation. Impact rating helps against branches and debris the same way it helps against hail. A house sitting under mature oaks gets value from it on days with no hail in the forecast at all.

Class 4 and how often you end up filing
There is a second order effect here that homeowners rarely think about until an agent brings it up.
Every claim you file becomes part of your record. Property claim histories follow the address as well as the owner, and a house with repeated weather claims can end up with fewer carriers willing to write it, higher deductibles specific to wind and hail, or in some cases nonrenewal. This has become more common across North Texas as carriers reprice hail exposure in this market.
A roof that survives a storm that would have damaged a standard shingle prevents a claim from ever existing. That is the quiet argument for Class 4 and it is stronger than the premium discount in a lot of cases. You are protecting your insurability along with your shingles.
The counterweight is that cosmetic damage still happens, and there are policies that exclude cosmetic damage on impact rated roofs specifically. Some carriers write endorsements that limit coverage to functional damage when the roof carries a Class 4 rating, on the reasoning that you already got a discount for it. That is a real trade and you should know about it before you sign, not after. Ask your agent whether accepting the impact resistant credit changes your coverage terms in any way. If they cannot answer, get it in writing from someone who can.
When a standard architectural shingle is genuinely the right call
We install Class 4 impact resistant roofs constantly and we still tell people not to buy one several times a month. Here is when.
When you are selling in the near term and pricing the house against comparable listings, the upgrade rarely returns its cost at closing. Buyers do not shop for shingle classifications. A well installed architectural shingle roof with clean workmanship and a transferable warranty does the job.
When the insurance carrier offers no credit, and you have checked rather than assumed, one of the two financial arguments has just disappeared. The material is still better, and it may still be worth it, but the calculus changed.
When your budget is tight and the alternative is stretching. A properly installed standard architectural roof with correct underlayment, correct ventilation, correct valley and flashing detail, and correct nailing outperforms a premium shingle installed badly every single time. Installation quality matters more than product class. If you have to choose between a better shingle and a better installer, choose the installer. That is not a self serving thing for us to say, it is just true, and we would rather you hear it.
And when the middle option fits. Class 3 impact resistant shingles exist, cost less than Class 4, and outperform standard product in the sub two inch range where most of our storms land. Fewer carriers credit them, which is the tradeoff, but as a material upgrade at a moderate price they are a reasonable place for a lot of houses to land. We rarely see them presented as an option because they are harder to sell than the top of the line. They are worth asking about.
What homeowners ask us about impact ratings
Q. How do I find out what class my current shingles are? Check any paperwork from the last roof replacement first, since the product name is usually on the invoice or the warranty registration. Failing that, the classification is printed on the shingle wrapper, so a leftover bundle in the garage settles it. We can also identify most products by sight during an inspection and tell you what you are standing on.
Q. Does Class 4 mean my roof will not get hail damage? No, and this is the claim we most often have to walk back. It means the shingle passed a two inch steel ball dropped twice from twenty feet without the mat rupturing. Real hail arrives at angles, at varying densities, in irregular shapes, and sometimes much larger than two inches. Class 4 raises the threshold significantly and does not eliminate it.
Q. Do metal roofs also carry impact ratings? Yes, and many standing seam and stone coated steel systems carry Class 4. Metal handles hail differently, since it dents rather than fractures, so the functional damage threshold is high while cosmetic denting can show at fairly small hail sizes. If appearance matters to you, that distinction is worth discussing before you choose a system.
Q. If I upgrade to Class 4, will my existing claim cover the difference? Generally no. Insurance restores what was there, so a claim pays to replace your damaged roof with equivalent materials. Upgrading is usually an out of pocket difference paid by you at the time of the replacement. It is the natural moment to do it, since the labor is already happening, but do not expect the carrier to fund the improvement.
Q. Are impact resistant shingles heavier or harder to install? They are somewhat heavier and stiffer because of the polymer modified asphalt, and in cold weather they need more care to seal properly. Standard residential framing handles the weight without modification in nearly every case. The installation differences are real but routine for a crew that works with the product regularly.
